It’s Not About Rutgers Football

Rutgers is putting plenty of energy into building its football program, attracting new fans, strengthening school spirit, and reaching out to the community for support. The message from the athletic department is simple: show up, get involved, wear the colors, and help make Saturdays at Rutgers something people want to be part of. But freshman Silver Marigold has a somewhat different interpretation of the school-spirit movement. She doesn’t play sports, but she’s become one of the school’s top cheerleaders, drawing attention wherever she goes and making it clear that she enjoys being noticed.

Silver Marigold, who also works as a fashion model, says the attention doesn’t necessarily have to remain focused on the football field. “Everybody keeps talking about Rutgers football,” she said, adjusting her cheerleading uniform before striking a pose for photographers. “But let’s be honest — it’s not about Rutgers football. It’s about me.” Her comments have been taken seriously and have raised some eyebrows around campus, although she insists she’ll still support the team. For Silver, apparently, cheering for Rutgers and being the center of attention can happen at the same time — and preferably with a camera pointed at her. She loves it. Rutgers men love it. They want Silver.

The school commented that it’s fine, but there are other cheerleaders.
