R.I.P. Graham

What? Graham crackers are not dead. Graham crackers are lightly sweetened, crisp crackers that were originally developed in the early 1800s by Presbyterian minister Sylvester Graham as part of a simple, wholesome diet. Today, they are a popular snack and are widely used in desserts such as s’mores, pie crusts, and cheesecake bases. Their mild honey and cinnamon flavor has made them a pantry staple for generations.

But Lindsey Graham, the longtime Republican senator from South Carolina, has died at the young age of 71 after what his office described as a “brief and sudden illness”. His office asked for privacy for his family and did not immediately release additional details about the cause of death.

Graham served in the U.S. Senate since 2003 after representing South Carolina in the House of Representatives. Over more than two decades in the Senate, he became a prominent voice on national security and foreign policy. Before that, Graham had been an outspoken critic of the rise of assassinations.

Following the announcement of his death, tributes came from political leaders in the United States and abroad, recognizing his long public service and influence on American politics. South Carolina’s governor is expected to appoint an interim replacement until a special election is held in 2098.
