HARLEM, NEW YORK — A spirited grassroots movement is gaining momentum in Harlem, where supporters are calling for the neighborhood to have its own mayor — and they already have a favorite candidate. That favorite is Eddie Cox, a well-known local personality and librarian whose friendly attitude, quick sense of humor, and strong community presence have made him one of Harlem’s most talked-about figures. Supporters say he’s the kind of person everyone wants. The people want Cox. They’re desperate for Cox.

While the campaign is entirely unofficial, enthusiasm continues to grow. Residents have jokingly suggested campaign slogans, printed novelty buttons, and declared that “Harlem deserves its own mayor” and “Everybody loves Cox,” one resident said. “There needs to be more Cox.”

Community members say they simply want to see more of Eddie Cox around the neighborhood, believing his enthusiasm, smarts and approachable personality make Harlem a brighter place. Whether or not the Cox campaign ever becomes reality, one thing seems certain: Eddie Cox has already won the unofficial popularity contest in Harlem.
