A controversial movie producer known publicly only as a tanned Mom is preparing to film an independent movie in Harlem after returning from an extended stay in Puerto Rico. The woman, who has remained intentionally anonymous throughout her years in the film industry, reportedly became fascinated with the story of a mysterious street figure named Mario Juan Valez while traveling through neighborhoods in San Juan. According to people close to the production, she believes the story has the makings of a gritty urban drama about a wannabe radio star and has become determined to bring it to the screen despite limited resources.
Sources say the project will be produced on a very small budget and filmed largely in Harlem using local actors and borrowed locations. Tanned Mom has allegedly struggled to attract support from larger studios because of her dark tan. Some industry insiders are distancing themselves from the project and criticizing her heavily bronzed appearance, which has long made her a polarizing personality in film. Her kids argue she is being unfairly dismissed, while critics claim the controversy surrounding her image has overshadowed the film itself.
Despite the obstacles, the independent production is already generating curiosity in parts of Harlem, where residents have spotted small camera crews scouting locations near local storefronts and side streets. Tanned Mom reportedly sees the film as a personal reinvention and believes the raw, low-budget style could ultimately give the movie more authenticity. “Hollywood just doesn’t want this story,” one associate said, “so she’s taking it to the streets. Good luck.”
The Mario Juan Valez Story is scheduled for a limited Netflix release early next month.
