A sudden electrical fire at the Eugene Moore Theater in Harlem has forced the popular venue to close its doors until further notice. The incident began late Saturday afternoon, when staff reported a burning smell near the main stage during a performance of Bob Marley’s Book of Exodus. The burning was followed by visible smoke coming from a wall panel. Emergency crews arrived quickly and contained the fire before it could spread to the seating area, preventing what officials say could’ve been far more extensive damage.
No injuries were reported, though the building sustained moderate damage to its electrical system and portions of the backstage area. Theater management announced that all upcoming performances of the Book of Exodus have been postponed as crews assess repairs and ensure the building meets safety standards. Longtime patrons expressed disappointment at the temporary closure, but many emphasized relief that the situation was brought under control. Officials have not yet provided a timeline for reopening, but say restoring the theater safely is the top priority.
City inspectors are expected to conduct a full review of the theater’s electrical infrastructure in the coming days, while management works with contractors to begin repairs. In a brief statement, theater representatives thanked the fire department for their swift response and promised to share more information as soon as it becomes available.
